Education

A group of teenagers are seated at a table, cutting and gluing pictures from magazines for a collage. A woman with a light skin-tone stands to their left. She wears a black outfit, a white headband, and a lanyard with a key.

CADVC provides a wide range of K-12 education outreach programs.

School Gallery Tours

Gallery tours must be scheduled two weeks in advance.

What Teachers Can Expect on a CADVC Gallery Visit

Often, we include gallery worksheets or scavenger hunts on gallery exhibition visits. These tools inspire closer looking and increase time spent reading and thinking critically about the artwork in the gallery. This usually takes students 20 minutes or less to complete.

After the worksheets are completed, a group discussion rounds out the gallery experience. When possible, an artist, curator, or faculty member may lead the discussion.

Other activities may include group sculpture building challenges or sketching exercises. These programs aim to incorporate the “Four C’s” of 21st Century skills (communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity), which are embraced by the Maryland State Department of Education’s Fine Arts Division as Maryland Fine Arts Standards.

A limited number of free bus trips to UMBC for scheduled K-12 gallery tours are available annually. Bus capacity is limited to 44 individuals, and near-full capacity is required. Reservations for these free trips are contingent upon the availability of funds and buses.

Space for eating bag lunches may be arranged or groups may visit the cafeteria to purchase lunches on site.

To schedule a gallery tour or request additional information, contact Sandra Abbott. Email: abbotts@umbc.edu or call: 410-455-1440. We appreciate accessibility-related accommodation requests two weeks in advance, but we always do our best to grant your requests regardless of when we receive them.
